Scottish Premiership champions Celtic loaned left-back Miller out to Championship title chasers Ayr United in the January transfer window.

Are Celtic already regretting the decision to loan Calvin Miller to Ayr United for the rest of the season? Quite possibly.

Because the Hoops could be without a natural left-back for their next couple of fixtures, including a daunting Europa League clash against Valencia next week and away at shock title challengers Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

Kieran Tierney remains on the sidelines while Emilio Izaguirre’s rare start descended into a nightmare during Wednesday’s 2-0 win against Hibernian. The Honduran international was stretchered off and, although the injury might not be as serious as first feared, he could still be set for a spell out of the team.

And Izaguirre’s blow could hardly have come at a worst time, given that Miller was loaned out to Scottish Championship title-chasers Ayr just last week.

The 21-year-old has not exactly featured regularly in Celtic colours but boosted his top-flight experience with a loan spell at Dundee in the first half of the season. So it might have been the perfect time to bring him back last month rather than farm him out again.

Instead, Celtic might have to call on the likes of Jonny Hayes and hope he can adapt out of position against Valencia and potentially Kilmarnock.
