The 33-year-old joined Hibernian after a trophy-laden six seasons at Celtic Park.
All good things must come to pass. After 226 appearances, 91 goals, five league medals, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup title, Kris Commons has bid farewell to Celtic, reuniting with former boss Neil Lennon at Hibernian on an emergency loan.
The 33-year-old may not have played a single minute of league action since Brendan Rodgers took charge in the summer but, to the majority of Celtic fans, Commons’ commitment and impressive goal-scoring record underpinned much of their success in recent seasons.
It certainly helps that, in the modern-day mercenary age, Commons’ love for the club was clear to see from day one. ‘You don’t ever really leave Celtic’, the winger’s wife wrote on social media after the exit was confirmed, a reported by the Scottish Sun. Many of the champions’ fans still wish he hadn’t.
Yet, it is difficult to deny the fact that the former Derby County winger was never likely to force his way into Brendan Rodgers’ plans. After all, such is Celtic’s depth and strength, even long-serving favourites a la Nir Bitton, Emilio Izaguirre and Leigh Griffiths are struggling to hold down a regular place in the side.
Nonetheless, Commons leaves with the goodwill of supporters on his side.
Really gutted about Commons leaving Celtic, he still had a great future at this club. He just needed a chance.
