Is Kieran Tierney of Celtic really better than Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso, AC Milan’s Ricardo Rodriguez and Bayer Leverkusen’s Wendell?

With a win and a defeat, it has been a mixed start to the Europa League campaign for Celtic.

Leigh Griffiths was the hero in the Hoops’ 1-0 opening day win against Rosenborg at Parkhead but Brendan Rodgers’ side were dragged back down to earth last Thursday as they were outclassed by a Munas Dabbur-inspired Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

But one player who usually transcends his team’s form is Kieran Tierney.

Regardless of how Celtic are playing, the homegrown left-back is usually a stand-out performer. And he has certainly caught the eye in the Europa League so far this season, particularly with a devastating attacking performance against the Norwegians of Rosenborg.

Tierney was a constant threat in attack, flying down the flanks and firing a series a superb crosses into the penalty area.

And, in a testament to his fine displays, the 21-year-old has been named as the best left-back in this season’s Europa League in an official Twitter poll which received over 42,000 votes from fans all across the world.

Tierney’s victory was a landslide, grabbing 58 per cent of the vote to finish ahead of Chelsea’s Spanish international Marcos Alonso, AC Milan set-piece specialist Ricardo Rodriguez and Bayer Leverkusen’s Samba star Wendell.

The cult of Tierney is growing.
