Scottish Premiership giants Celtic were linked with a shock move to rescue Jack Rodwell from his Sunderland nightmare back in the January transfer window.
No doubt Scott Sinclair would have done an excellent job of selling Celtic to Jack Rodwell when the Sunderland outcast was linked with a shock move to the Scottish Premiership giants back in January by the Sunderland Echo.
Sinclair made that ill-fated move to Manchester City alongside Rodwell in the summer of 2012, but the two Englishman failed to make the grade at the Etihad Stadium and endured similar struggles after leaving the club.
But Sinclair has revived his career since moving to Celtic almost two years ago, winning the SPFA Player of the Year award and nabbing the Golden Boot two as the Hoops won the title last season.
Rodwell, however, continues to see his reputation plummet. So a move to Celtic, and a spell under Brendan Rodgers, might have been just what the former Everton wonderkid needed to kick-start a career that once promised so much.
But, in truth, it would make little sense for Celtic to make a concrete offer for Rodwell this summer. the 27-year-old has made just two league appearances for Sunderland this season – the last coming in September – and remains an outcast to this day.
And Rodwell has hardly suggested that he is chomping at the bit to get back on the football pitch again. The Sun claimed in February that Rodwell, who is Sunderland’s highest earner on £70,000 a week, had rejected the chance to move away on loan or have his contract terminated, leading manager Chris Coleman to question his desire to earn his living.
So there appears to be little justification for Celtic to offer him a fresh start. A player has to help himself before Celtic help the player.
