Scottish Premiership giants Celtic are rivalling Championship promotion hopefuls Cardiff City for Motherwell goalkeeper Trevor Carson this summer.
It seemed that the ship had sailed for Trevor Carson’s hopes of making what he described as a life-changing move to Celtic this year.
With Craig Gordon sidelined with a long-term injury, the Scottish Premiership giants tried and failed to bring Northern Ireland shot-stopper Carson to Parkhead and offered £375,000 for his services.
Motherwell, however, refused to play ball. The Daily Record claims that they demanded £750,000 for a man who, just three months later, would be named the club’s Player of the Year.
Before the January window slammed shut, and with a deal for Carson dead in the water, Celtic instead turned to Scott Bain. They signed the 26-year-old on loan from Dundee and he has been so impressive that, according to the Scottish Sun, the Hoops want to snap him up on a free when his contract expires this summer.
Although in claims reported by the Sun (15 April, page 61), Carson is still on their radar.
It is understood that Cardiff City are interested in the 30-year-old and could offer him the chance to play Premier League football next season, should Neil Warnock lead the Bluebirds back to the promised land.
But the report adds that Celtic are keen, too. And this comes on the same day that Bain was left out for Craig Gordon in the Scottish Cup semi-final clash with Rangers. Gordon has now started two of the last three games.
Has Brendan Rodgers got cold feet about his Dundee loanee? Bain has done nothing wrong in a Celtic shirt, so making Carson their top target at his expense would seem a little harsh.
