Celtic should not stand in Saidy Janko's way as Sheffield Wednesday plot move

Saidy Janko appears to have no future at Celtic having been loaned out to Barnsley last season and Sheffield Wednesday could offer him a fresh start.

At the age of 21, Saidy Janko is still waiting for his career to get going. Swapping FC Zurich for Manchester United in 2013 hardly propelled him towards Old Trafford stardom with his only appearance coming in that ill-fated 4-0 battering at MK Dons in the League Cup.

And it is fair to say swapping United for Celtic in the summer of 2015 is yet to reap its rewards either. The right-back has only made ten league appearances for the Scottish giants and his most recent appearance for the club looks to have ended any hopes he may have had of kicking on under Brendan Rodgers.

Starting the Champions League qualifier second-leg against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in August, Janko endured a disastrous display as Celtic went down 2-0 in Israel. Giving away a penalty for the opener and gifting the hosts the second, he was fortunate that Rodgers’ side prevailed 5-4 on aggregate.

A week later, Janko was farmed out to Barnsley on a season-long loan. And, almost 12 months on, it appears that the Swiss youth international will be handed the chance to revive his stuttering career with a fresh-start.

Whether he wants to take it, however, remains to be seen. After all, he told the club’s official website in April that he wasn’t giving up hope of becoming a success at Celtic.

HITC sources told us that Sheffield Wednesday are battling Reading and Bristol City in the hope of signing Janko on a permanent basis in the summer. The youngster may have only started seven Championship games in Barnsley colours last season but it appears that he has done enough to attract admirers.

Wednesday, who were beaten by Huddersfield Town in the play-off semi-finals a month ago, could do with reinforcements at right-back.

And it would be no surprise if Celtic were to let him go. Despite The Herald claiming that Cristian Gamboa could also depart this summer, it appears that Janko’s disastrous display in Israel has ruined his prospects under Rodgers.
