Celtic will travel to Austrian Bundesliga champions Red Bull Salzburg in Thursday’s Europa League clash.

History is certainly against Celtic heading into their Europa League clash at Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday night.

The Austrian champions are certainly a daunting proposition, and not just because they have one of the most in-form strikers in Europe in Israeli international Munas Dabbur.

Salzburg reached the Europa League semi-finals last season and Ralf Rangnick, whose RB Leipzig side lost at home to their Red Bull sister club in match-day one, claimed that they are one of the best sides on the continent right now, as reported by the Daily Record.

Celtic fans, then, may be a little apprehensive. And with good reason.

After all, Celtic have never won a European match in Austria, conceding at least two goals in all five games. They also have not won away in the Europa League in their last 14 games.

Given that Salzburg are unbeaten in each of their last 10 fixtures in the competition’s group stage, winning six and drawing four, it would be a major shock if Celtic were to return from Austria with all three points.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are not only going up against one of the most dangerous teams in the division but also some very worrying recent trends after all.
