Celtic need a new midfielder after David Turnbull returned to Scottish Premiership rivals Motherwell so what about Fortuna Sittard’s Eredivisie ace Diemers?

Celtic put all their eggs in one basket and that has now come back to haunt them.

The Scottish Premiership champions have been linked with a host of gifted attacking midfielders since the 2018/19 campaign came to an end but it seemed that they were putting all their energy into getting a £3.25 million deal for David Turnbull over the line.

But, with the 19-year-old returning to Motherwell after failing a medical at Parkhead, as reported by the BBC, Celtic have been left in a rather awkward position. They still need a goal-scoring midfielder but have they left it too late to revisit a couple of targets?

Voetbal International claimed in May that Celtic were gathering information about Fortuna Sittard star Mark Diemers. Like Turnbull, he is a roving and intelligent player who thrives just behind a main centre-forward.

The Dutchman scored eight goals in all competitions last season. And he looks every inch the perfect alternative to Turnbull.

According to Limburger, interest is on the rise with CFR Cluj and Ferencvaros both seeing £1.8 million bids rejected. So with Celtic suddenly thrust back into the market in search of a new number ten, now might be the perfect time to look at Diemers again – before his value rises further.
