Current Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers brought Joe Gomez to Liverpool in 2015 – but could he offer him an escape route this summer?

Brendan Rodgers could hardly hide his delight after enticing a fresh faced, relatively unknown defender to Liverpool in the summer of 2015.

“He’s only 18 years of age but he looked an outstanding athlete and a really good footballer,” Rodgers said in quotes reported by the Daily Mail.

And it became immediately clear that former Charlton Athletic prodigy Joe Gomez had the natural talent to back up his manager’s praise. The teenager even started five Premier League games until a cruel cruciate ligament blow stopped his development in its tracks.

These days, the England youth international is attempting to force his way back into Liverpool’s plans with Jurgen Klopp now at the helm. However, having failed to feature since January’s humiliating FA Cup defeat at home to Wolves, he appears to be fighting a losing battle.

South Coast or Scotland?

As such, The Sun reports that Gomez could even leave the club in the summer. They add that Bournemouth will offer the £10 million-rated defender an escape route, with a loan move also a possibility.

The fact that Jordan Ibe and Brad Smith have struggled to make any sort of an impact since swapping Merseyside for the South Coast should not prevent The Cherries from making a move for one of England’s most exciting young prospects.

However, if Liverpool will consider letting Gomez go, you can expect Celtic to be at the front of the queue. After all, the Daily Mail reported in January that Rodgers was targeting a reunion with Gomez at the Scottish champions.

And with doubts surrounding the futures of Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic, the central defensive pair recently linked to the Premier League, Celtic may be in need of reinforcements. And who better than a man Rodgers knows and trusts?

At £10 million, Gomez may be a little pricey on a permanent deal. Therefore, a season-long loan could be the perfect solution for all parties. It seems a little soon for Liverpool to cast him off, after all.
