Celtic losing out on Barry Douglas to Wolves should not give Brendan Rodgers sleepless nights

Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Celtic to the signing of former Dundee United left-back Barry Douglas.

Brendan Rodgers appears to have inherited something of a Midas Touch since making the move to Celtic last year. With a clean sweep of domestic trophies and a number of impressive transfer coups, the Northern Irishman could be forgiven for struggling to identify the pang of disappointment.

And, in truth, Rodgers should not be too worried about the fact that Celtic have missed out on Barry Douglas.

According to the Express and Star, the former Dundee United left-back, who has most recently been plying his trade in Turkey with Konyaspor, has returned to British shores with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Despite Celtic being able to offer Champions League football and the obvious prospect of silverware, the report claims that Wolves were able to offer the £1m million defender a greater financial package – something which may have ruled Celtic out of the running.

However, it is fair to say missing out on Douglas will not elicit too many sleepless nights in Glasgow. After all, the left-back position is hardly a weak spot in Celtic’s squad.

Long-serving Honduran international Emilio Izaguirre recently committed his future to Celtic via a one-year contract extension before claiming that he hopes to stay another three seasons at Parkhead, via the Daily Record.

And he is likely to remain a sturdy, experienced back-up option for Kieran Tierney.

According to The Sun, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was eyeing up a £15 million move for the highly-rated 20-year-old as a potential replacement for the out-of-favour Luke Shaw. Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked.

However, the home-grown hero, crowned Scotland’s Young Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons, appears to have no desire to chase the bright lights of the Premier League just yet.

“It’s flattering, but I don’t bother about it too much,” Tierney told Goal. “My pals have been texting me and stuff like that, and it would play more in your head if you weren’t happy at your club, but I’m happy at Celtic. It’s just a story.”

Therefore, it appears that Douglas is not needed at Parkhead.
