Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are currently a point ahead of Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.
Celtic legend Charlie Nicholas knows that everything is not rosy at Parkhead right now.
Despite winning domestic trebles in each of his two seasons in charge, Brendan Rodgers is under huge pressure after Celtic began his third campaign at the helm in worrying form. The Hoops are sixth in the table, having endured their worst domestic start in 20 years.
And Celtic’s apparent decline is in stark contrast to Rangers’ vast improvements under Steven Gerrard. The Gers might be just a point clear of Celtic but they are in fine form, scoring nine times in their last two league games against Dundee (4-0) and St Johnstone (5-1).
And Nicholas, who made 254 appearances for Celtic in two spells, admits that the current situation has left him ‘concerned’.
“Rangers last season may have won that game against St Johnstone 1-0 or 2-0; now they are going to Europe, getting results, thrashing teams domestically and momentum is growing,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“They are a giant club and now they’ve got an iconic manager. There’s no doubt Gerrard has improved the quality – now they are starting to gel and starting to believe.
“Rangers lost seven league games at home last season – that will not happen this season. They will have a much better record, which means they will close the gap on Celtic.
“Celtic are playing poorly, Rangers have momentum. For the neutrals, it absolutely makes things interesting but as a Celtic man I am concerned – seriously concerned.”
It cannot be forgotten that Celtic beat Rangers 1-0 in the Old Firm derby at the start of September, with the extent of their dominance not reflected in the scoreline. Plus the season is just two months old, so Rangers have a long way to go to prove the tide really has turned.
