The January transfer window is open and fans of Scottish Premiership giants Celtic want a successor for right-back Mikael Lustig.

Mikael Lustig of Celtic urges his team forward during the Betfred League Cup Final between Celtic and Motherwell at Hampden Park on November 26, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It is telling that Rangers appeared to target Mikael Lustig in the Old Firm derby draw at Parkhead on Saturday.

It seemed that the long-serving Swede had been identified as the weak link in Celtic’s rearguard, and with good reason. Anyone who has watched the reigning champions on a regular basis this season will certainly tell you that Lustig certainly has not been at his best of late.

And it was thanks to his shaky performance that Rangers appeared to have a genuine chance of winning at Parkhead in the league for the first time in seven years.

Lustig is 31 these days and, after six years on the green half of Glasgow, his influence appears to be waning at both ends of the pitch.

It seems only a matter of time before young Anthony Ralston replaces him as Celtic’s first-choice right-back. For now, however, the jury is out about whether the teenager, who only recently signed a new long-term contract, is ready to follow fellow academy starlet Kieran Tierney into the Hoops’ back line.

But with the January transfer window open, many Celtic fans would welcome a new right-back with open arms as Lustig’s decline continues. Although it appears that the Swedish international still has Brendan Rodgers’ trust for now.
