Celtic were linked with Brighton winger Jamie Murphy over the summer, but Old Firm rivals Rangers are now reportedly plotting a £1.2m bid.
Celtic were interested in signing £4 million-rated Jamie Murphy from Brighton in July, according to the Sky Sports. Just a few months later, however, speculation has intensified that the winger could indeed be making the move to Glasgow – though he seems more likely to be wearing blue and green.
The Scottish Sun claimed that Murphy is high on Rangers’ list of transfer targets in the New Year. Director of football Mark Allen, who is in charge of recruitment while The Gers continue looking for a new manager, would be interested in landing the 28-year-old on loan.
But the report adds that Allen would prefer to sign Murphy on a permanent deal with a £1.2 million bid being mooted for the former Motherwell star.
The former Scotland Under-21 ace is understood to be a boyhood Rangers fan and wanted to move to Ibrox from Sheffield United after their demotion to the fourth tier back in 2012, as reported by the Glasgow Evening Times.
These days, Murphy would still come in handy with Rangers on the lookout for a new left winger. He’d certainly come in more useful at Ibrox than at Parkhead – with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic hardly short of quality options on either flank.
Though that doesn’t mean, however, that Celtic fans are keeping schtum as Rangers plot a marquee January move.
