Rangers rejected a £9m offer for striker Alfredo Morelos and fans of Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic had plenty to say at the time.

Celtic fans did not believe for one second that Rangers rejected a £9 million bid for Alfredo Morelos.

The Scottish Sun reported last month that Chinese Super League side Beijing Renhe had made a fourth offer for the Colombian striker since the turn of the year – the final bid verging on an eight-figure sum.

Rangers, however, stood firm and refused to let Morelos go. This is despite the fact that the Ibrox giants are not exactly flushed with cash and would have made a remarkable profit on a player they signed for just £1 million from HJK Helsinki a few months prior.

It is fair to say, however, that Celtic fans were less than convinced that Morelos is worthy of such a fee. The Hoops have their own sought-after striker in Mousa Dembele and, glancing through their green-tinted glasses, they do not think Rangers’ prolific centre-forward is anywhere near the same class.

So what an opportunity Morelos has, then, to prove himself to his Celtic supporting cynics this weekend and ram those comments back where they came from.

Rangers host Brendan Rodgers’ side at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon and, in truth, they have never looked so dangerous since their demotion in 2012.

And Morelos, who has 17 goals in all competitions this season and five more than Dembele, will hope to be at the forefront of an Old Firm shock.
