But the Daily Record has since reported that Celtic are fighting to keep hold of the former Manchester City youngster. The Scottish champions are allegedly continuing to work on a contract extension with Boyata, who has a year left on his current deal, and have made it clear that they want him to stay.
That might make sense to some. Boyata is a key player under Brendan Rodgers and started 28 Scottish Premiership games last season. And, with Erik Sviatchenko already gone and January recruits Marvin Compper and Jack Hendry struggling to make a positive impact as of yet, selling another defender would be a risky strategy.
On the other hand, Celtic should be snapping Lazio’s hand off for £7 million. After all, Boyata will be a free agent in just 12 months and that is a significant fee to a club like the Bhoys, where money is hardly boundless.
Celtic may have already pulled off a masterstroke by convincing Southampton to part with big money for Stuart Armstrong and commanding another hefty fee for an error-prone player would be brilliant business.
