Celtic and Sunderland are two of the clubs that have been linked with the prolific Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland in recent weeks.

According to Wales Online, Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops have shown an interest in a player who has a quite remarkable 28 goals in 26 games in all competitions this season.

The Daily Record, however, claimed Sunderland were tracking Shankland prior to the January transfer window with Ayr understood to be valuing their star man, whose contract expires in the summer, at a potential bargain £400,000.

And Ayr manager Ian McCall has now provided a fresh update. And it seems that Celtic and Sunderland are far from alone in their pursuit of a striker who simply cannot stop scoring.

Speaking to the BBC, the coach stated that “about 15 clubs” have made enquiries but he wants Shankland to stay, with Ayr three points behind Ross County at the top of Scotland’s second tier.

Ayr United manager Ian McCall is seen during the Betfred Scottish League Cup Quarter Final match between Rangers and Ayr United on September 26, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I think Lawrence will just wait until the end of the season,” McCall said. “(There are approaches from) Scotland, England and Holland.”

Celtic have already landed Timothy Weah on loan from PSG and snapped up Vakoun Issouf Bayo too so any interest in Shankland can probably wait until the summer.

Sunderland, meanwhile, could do with a new centre-forward as speculation persists about the future of top scorer Josh Maja.
