Hugo Lloris’ position as Spurs’ number one could come under threat after his big mistake in the Champions League defeat against Barcelona.

Mauricio Pochettino might have a difficult decision to make about a player who was, until very recently, an undisputed starter in Tottenham Hotspur’s first-team.

Hugo Lloris might have won the World Cup with France this summer but it is becoming impossible to ignore the 31-year-old’s struggles at club level.

In his first appearance since the end of August, Lloris made a massive mistake in the 4-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday, racing off his line and being caught in no man’s land to gift Philippe Coutinho the opening goal in the 2nd minute.

And, speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT (4 October, 10am), Tony Cascarino has seemingly said what a lot of Spurs fans are thinking about their number one and club captain.

“Do the fans really rate their goalkeeper? Cause I don’t,” Cascarino claimed.

“I think he’s a poor footballing keeper like Petr Cech is as well. Even Burnley have got three better than Hugo Lloris! I’ve never felt he’s that commanding of a keeper, a keeper who can lead them to titles.

“I think Hugo Lloris doesn’t have the ability to kick the ball and he makes rash decisions. He’s their captain, he’s a player who won the World Cup but I don’t actually think he’s that good.”

Cascarino even encouraged Tottenham to follow in Liverpool’s footsteps and pay big-money for a truly world class shot-stopper like Alisson Becker.

“He’s a liability at times. There’s better goalkeepers out there who could be Spurs’ number one and I think that’s the next thing Pochettino will do.”

Paulo Gazzaniga impressed between the sticks in recent weeks, coming in for an injured Lloris and impressing in Premier League games against Huddersfield and Brighton.

Now, Pochettino may need to re-evaluate who should be his number one.
