Mo Salah failed to score again for Liverpool in their Premier League draw away at Chelsea but should Jurgen Klopp be wringing his hands?
It is perhaps a little unfair to get carried away with Mo Salah’s form. Though after scoring 44 goals in a remarkable debut season for Liverpool, it was perhaps inevitable that the Egyptian international would find himself under the microscope should his impeccable standards slip.
Then again, it does seem that some fans are getting a little hysterical over a player who appears to be enduring a simple dip in form.
Salah has scored just three goals in nine games this season and he missed a number of presentable chances in Saturday’s 1-1 draw away at Chelsea, though he showed plenty of sharpness to sniff out those promising positions in the first place.
And former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has made an excellent point speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, comparing Salah to the legendary Anfield goalscorer Ian Rush.
“I think a little bit too much has probably been made of Salah’s form. He is only one goal down on (this stage) last season,” Carragher said.
“I hope Klopp is saying this to him about the goals he scored last season: if he doesn’t get over 40 goals, it doesn’t mean he’s had a bad season.
“Ian Rush was Liverpool’s greatest ever goalscorer and he only got 47 in one season. He never got 47 again, he would score 25 or 30 goals a season. If Salah gets 25 goals then he’s had a great season.”
Fortunately for Liverpool, the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have maintained their fine form of last season while Daniel Sturridge, who scored that wonderful 89th minute equaliser at Stamford Bridge, appears to be getting back towards his 2014 best.
