Leeds United’s U23s battered Watford 6-0 in Monday night’s Professional Development League North clash at Elland Road and coach Carlos Corberan has admitted to LUTV that this was one of their best displays since he took over.

Fresh from scoring a crucial goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win away at Championship rivals Barnsley at Oakwell, the prolific Eddie Nketiah was on target twice more for Leeds’ U23s as Watford were hit for six in West Yorkshire.

The Arsenal loanee was joined on the score sheet by Tyler Roberts, Pascal Struijk, Robbie Gotts and Luke Ayling who, as the Hornets were all too keen to point out on Twitter, has played over 100 games for the Whites’ first-team.

And Corberan, who replaced Jason Blunt to become Leeds’ U23 coach in 2017, believes the second string have shown that they possess the quality and the character to earn a place in Marcelo Bielsa’s plans after dominating from the first whistle to the last.

“Yes,” the Spaniard said when asked if this was one of the best displays in his two years in charge. “I think the level of the other team was their normal level but (Leeds) was top from the beginning.

“I think when the other team is conceding three or four goals you can start to relax. But one of the special things for me today is that the team showed a very competitive character and this is very important.

“We played with the same intensity from the first minute to the 90th minute. This is a fantastic thing. This is one of the skills they have to have to arrive in the first team.”

While Corberan will be thrilled to see Gaetano Berardi, Barry Douglas, Roberts and Ayling all through the game unscathed, special mentions must go to the all-action Gotts and 16-year-old Stuart McKinstry, who produced an electrifying performance in his first ever Elland Road outing.
