Carlos Carvalhal could have taken over Glasgow Rangers in 2015 but was appointed by Sheffield Wednesday instead.

For the first time since they returned to the Scottish Premiership in 2016, Rangers seem to be heading in the right direction.

After the disappointing and at times divisive spells of Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty, the Glasgow giants appear to be pulling in the right direction under Steven Gerrard and will begin their first Europa League campaign since 2011 when they face Villarreal on Thursday.

But how different could things have been at Ibrox? Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT (September 18, 10am), Carlos Carvalhal has admitted that he held talks with Rangers before being appointed by Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2015.

“I came to London to talk with people from Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday,” Carvalhal admitted. “But Wednesday came faster (with their approach).

“I was very excited (about the prospect of managing Rangers). If I was there I am sure we could have done very good work. But they are in very good hands (with Gerrard).”

Carvalhal was something of an unknown quantity back in 2015 and arrived at Hillsborough after managing 15 different clubs in 17 years in management.

The affable Portuguese was initially a big success at Wednesday, twice leading the club to the play-offs and losing against Hull City at Wembley in 2016 before being sacked in December last year and taking over at Swansea City, who he failed to save from relegation.

Rangers might have missed out on Carvalhal in 2015 but the season still went pretty well. The Ibrox powerhouses appointed Mark Warburton shortly after and he led them to the Scottish Premiership title, finishing 11 points clear of Falkirk.
