Leeds United, Derby County and Premier League newcomers Sheffield United are reportedly keen on Carlisle United winger Liam McCarron.
Carlisle United’s director of football David Holdsworth has confirmed to the News and Star that they have received a bid from a Championship club for young winger Liam McCarron – amid ongoing links with Leeds United and Derby County.
After suffering Championship play-off heartbreak in May, Leeds and Derby are plotting another assault on the second tier. But, to do so, they will probably have to replace influential widemen who look set to go.
Harry Wilson is unlikely to return to Pride Park after a stunning loan spell from Liverpool while Leeds’ fleet-footed teenager Jack Clarke has been linked with countless Premier League clubs.
And that is where McCarron comes in.
According to The Mail, Leeds are ready to make a £250,000 bid for the 18-year-old, who has been described as an ‘old-school’ and ‘exciting’ winger by Carlisle coach Paul Murray (News and Star). Derby are interested too.
And while Holdsworth didn’t name names, he did confirm that one Championship club have made a bid.
“We have had bids from a Championship club and had conversations with a Premier League club regarding Liam. That is ongoing,” he said.
“If a club does come through the door now, they’ve got to pay the amount we feel in terms of compensation and for the potential [he has] going forward, whether that’s Premier League, Championship and beyond.
“Jarrad has a great future – I’ve had a lot of calls on him and he is potentially a very good player.”
That Premier League club could perhaps be Sheffield United, who were also linked by The Mail.
