Mark Warburton may be gone but should Nottingham Forest still target Rangers’ Wes Foderingham?

Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham was reportedly a target for former Ibrox manager Mark Warburton at Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Rangers fans may have been glad to hear that former manager Mark Warburton had been handed his P45 after ten months in charge of Nottingham Forest.

Not out of bitterness, but because Warburton was reportedly hoping to reunite with one of his Ibrox favourites at the City Ground in January.

Goalkeeper Mark Foderingham was Warburton’s third signing at Rangers after he took over in the summer of 2015. And with his Forest side searching for a new number one, reports stated that the 55-year-old had turned his attention to the former Swindon Town shot-stopper once more.

According to The Scottish Sun, Foderingham was one of the first names on Warburton’s hitlist. And the report added that the 26-year-old would have seriously considered a move to the Championship after forging a close relationship with Warburton during their two years together at Ibrox.

Crucially, however, this report emerged just one day before Warburton was sacked by Forest after a run of one win in seven Championship outings – a 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland sealing his fate.

As such, it now appears that Rangers can rest easy with their first-choice goalkeeper seemingly unlikely to be going anywhere in January.

Yet, just because Warburton has gone, that does not mean Foderingham would not still be an excellent signing for Forest. He has been arguably the best goalkeeper in Scotland over the last year or so and his skill-set, combining ball-playing abilities with excellent reflexes, means he would fit in immediately at the City Ground.

Furthermore, Foderingham has gained plenty of experience performing behind a shaky back line at Ibrox, so he is well placed to perform a similar role in a Forest side whose defence continues to let them down.

The question, however, is whether Warburton’s exit has killed off any hopes Forest had of signing a player who would have immediately improved their starting XI.
