Motherwell striker Louis Moult will be doing his best to prevent Celtic from marching to another treble this season.
When Celtic face off against Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers will not need to devote too much time to figuring out who the underdog’s main dangerman will be.
Louis Moult has started his third season at Motherwell on fire and has eight goals already in the Scottish Premiership this season – as many as the much-vaunted Celtic duo of Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele have between them.
In fact, Moult has been one of the most impressive strikers around north of the border since making that inspired move from non-league Wrexham United back in 2015, netting 30 goals in the last two seasons.
If the former Stoke City youngster can find the sort of form that vanquished Celtic’s Old Firm rivals Rangers with a clinical brace in the semi-final, Rodgers’ runaway favourites could find themselves in danger of a real upset.
And, with Moult out of contract at the end of the season, the striker should see such a high-profile game as a real opportunity to prove he belongs at the top of the domestic game. Perhaps even that he belongs at a club like Celtic.
Rangers have been linked relentlessly with Moult over the past few months, the Scottish Sun tipping them to renew their interest in January after Motherwell refused to sell in the summer.
But with Rodgers himself admitting that Dembele is likely to depart Parkhead at the end of this season, Celtic will need to fill that void in their attack and who better than one of the most proven and prolific strikers in Scottish football right now?
If Moult aces his audition on Sunday, he will suddenly look the part for Celtic.
