Summer Sunderland target Cameron Jerome gives indication on Norwich City future

Sunderland were linked with Cameron Jerome in the summer but the striker ended up sticking with Norwich City.

Cameron Jerome boasts plenty of Championship pedigree and that is always going to lead to interest from second tier clubs crying out for a goalscorer.

Unsurprisingly, a Derby County side who scored fewer goals than any other in last season’s top half and a relegated Sunderland shorn of talisman Jermaine Defoe were both linked with a striker who has three promotions on an impressive CV, per the Chronicle.

And that’s without mentioning the fact that Jerome scored 34 goals in his last two Championship campaigns for Norwich City.

Though the 31-year-old has admitted that he was more than happy to stay with The Canaries this summer despite reports that he could join fellow long-serving servants Michael Turner, John Ruddy and co in departing Carrow Road.

“There’s going to be speculation at times as a player, and you’ve got to be able to deal with that,” Jerome told the Norwich Evening News. “For me, I’m happy here – I can’t express it any other way than that.

“From my point of view my family is settled here, I’ve had three amazing years here so far, I’m contracted to the football club and every time I go out on the pitch I try my hardest for the team.

“I’m happy here and I enjoy playing for this manager, so my heart is here for the time being until my contract runs out (in 2019) and we’ll see from there.”

Sloppy Sunderland miss out

Sunderland, however, may wish that they had managed to convince Jerome to join them in Wearside.

Simon Grayson’s strugglers are sitting second from bottom in the table just a few months after being relegated from the Premier League while summer signings Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan have hardly set the world alight in attack.

Though Jerome has only one Championship goal to his name this season, his experience and stand-out track record could have been vital in what could be another relegation scrap for the Black Cats.
