Burnley wanted £8m, but could Rangers land Scott Arfield for free?

Scottish Premiership giants Rangers would not have to spend a penny to sign Scott Arfield from Premier League side Burnley in the summer.

Rangers may be a dream move for Scott Arfield.

The Scotland-born Canada international told Burnley’s official website in 2016 ahead of a pre-season friendly clash with the Ibrox giants that he comes from a long line of Rangers supporters.

So with the Mirror (14 January) reporting that the Gers were considering bringing Arfield to Glasgow, the long-serving Clarets star must surely have been tempted.

And with his contract expiring in the summer, there is a very real chance that the 29-year-old could be heading to Rangers on a free if both parties can agree on a deal.

Signing Arfield would be an impressive move for Rangers, given that he has been playing regular Premier League football over the last few seasons. And he would surely walk into Graeme Murty’s starting XI despite the raft of midfield talent already at the manager’s disposal.

And a deal would be all the more eye-catching considering that the Mail states that Burnley had demanded £8 million for Arfield on the final day of last month’s transfer window. Arfield was heavily linked with a move away from Turf Moor in January with the Independent claiming that West Ham were very keen.

But Burnley’s valuation of £8 million shows not only how impressive the former Huddersfield Town man has been since moving to Lancashire but how vital his versatility and experience are to Sean Dyche’s side.

Rangers have demonstrated their pulling power and market nous by luring the likes of Jason Cummings and Jamie Murphy to Ibrox on cheap deals, however, and Arfield could be the best of the lot at an £8 million reduction.
