Bruno Alves arrived at Rangers last summer pledging to seize the Scottish Premiership crown from Old Firm rivals Celtic.

In reality, Bruno Alves really set himself up for a fall once his move from Cagliari to Rangers was confirmed last year.
A serial winner who has lifted league titles in Portugal, Turkey and Russia, not to mention Euro 2016 with Portugal, the 36-year-old centre-back obviously expected to add the Scottish Premiership crown to his silver-coated CV.

“I have this feeling and this desire to win and I think to move here will bring this back to me and to my career,” Alves said. “At almost all the clubs I have played for I win, and I expect to win here for the fans and for the club; I think I can do this here.
“I want to be a champion again. This is one of the best feelings that I have in my career and the last time I was a champion at a club was in Fenerbahce. I want to have this feeling again.
“I think I come here for the right reasons and I think that I can bring this back to the club.”
Spoiler alert; he didn’t.

Now, one year after arriving, his confidence in stopping Celtic from winning a seventh title in a row looks rather misplaced. Especially considering that he has played his last game for the club.
Celtic sauntered to first place last season, finishing 12 points clear of a Rangers side who ended the campaign third behind Aberdeen, too.
Right from the off, Alves’s hopes of adding another winners’ medal to his collection looked pretty much impossible.
