Imagine you are a manager and you’re given a blank cheque to sign anyone in world football. It’s unlikely that Barry Bannan would be at the top of your list.

However, the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has plenty of admirers at Championship level with Sky Sports reporting in late August that The Owls were forced to reject a bid from Hull City for the fans’ favourite. Birmingham City also made a late move on deadline day.

And Bristol City boss Lee Johnson is another a firm admirer of the Scotland international. When asked by a supporter during an interview on The Robins’ official Facebook page which player he dreams of signing from a Championship rival, Johnson wasted no time in lauding the qualities of Bannan, as well as Preston North End duo Daniel Johnson and Ben Pearson.

“Probably someone who can unlock a door,” Johnson explained in quotes reported by the Bristol Post.

“There’s quite a few good spotters from midfield, if you like.”

The answer was purely hypothetical of course and Wednesday supporters should not be concerned that one of their most impressive performers over recent seasons will be leaving for a league rival any time soon.

Wednesday rejecting bids from both Hull and Birmingham speaks volumes of how highly they rate the former Aston Villa youngster.
