Fraser Forster was a hero at Scottish Premiership giants Celtic – but has lost his place with Premier League strugglers Southampton of late.
Celtic may well go into the summer transfer window with a new goalkeeper right at the top of their priority list.
Craig Gordon’s absence through injury has highlighted just how light the Hoops are in the shot-stopping department, with his replacement the 37-year-old Dorus de Vries failing to rid himself of a reputation of a goalkeeper who makes far too many errors to be relied upon.
Meanwhile Scott Bain, who arrived on loan from Dundee during the January transfer window, has not played a game since moving to Parkhead.
So Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers should be keeping a close eye on the market and Fraser Forster’s situation at Southampton should be of interest.
After all, Forster was fantastic during four years at Parkhead, joining initially on loan from Newcastle United before signing permanently in 2012 for £2 million, as reported by The Mail.
In fact, Forster performed so well in Scotland that he earned a £10 million move to The Saints and quickly became an England international, per The Guardian.
These days, however, the three-time Scottish Premiership champion finds himself on the bench, losing his place to Alex McCarthy after a series of shaky displays.
And according to The Sun, Southampton are looking to bring in Ben Foster if, or when, West Brom are relegated from the Premier League – which leaves Forster in a very precarious position and in danger of becoming the club’s third choice.
If that is the case, Celtic could do a lot worse than to enquire about the availability of their former fans’ favourite, whose value must have dropped substantially after losing his place between the sticks at St Mary’s.
