Charlie Adam could leave Premier League side Stoke City in the summer and he’d be open to a return to Ibrox with Scottish Premiership giants Rangers.

Charlie Adam’s contract at Stoke City comes to an end at the culmination of this season.

With the Scottish midfielder admitting to The Times that he would be open to a return to Rangers if no other Premier League offers are on the table come the summer, the Ibrox giants may have a decision to make.

Yes, Adam is 32 years of age and his best days are consigned to the past, no longer pinging 30 yard free-kicks into the top corner or providing powerful forward runs like a budget Steven Gerrard.

But the former Blackpool and Liverpool playmaker would still provide some added experience in the centre of the park and could be a great example to the many young players coming through the ranks at Rangers right now.

Yet, it must be noted that Rangers’ recent success has come not from handing has-beens like Niko Kranjcar, Philippe Senderos and Joey Barton one last contract but by providing a platform for young, hungry talents to prove their worth.

Rangers’ vast improvements this season have been inspired by fresh-faced rising stars like Alfredo Morelos, Ross McCrorie, Greg Docherty and Jason Cummings.

Old Firm rivals Celtic established themselves as Scotland’s dominant force by putting their faith in talented prospects and allowing them to grow together as a group and Rangers appear to embracing, and benefitting from, a similar approach.

So with the seldom-seen, injury-prone 30-something Kranjcar set to leave when his contract expires in the summer, this should be seen as an opportunity for Liam Burt or Jamie Barjonas to stake their claim.

Re-signing a slow, declining Adam would go against everything that has worked so well in the last few months. In fact, this would be a step back to the comparatively dark days of the Mark Warburton, Frank MacParland regime which promised much but delivered expensive disappointment.
