Vaclav Hladky could leave Scottish Premiership strugglers St Mirren for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.

Simon Mignolet of Liverpool looks on during a training session on April 9, 2018 in Liverpool, England.

Whenever a goalkeeper from a lower-table side is linked with one of the league’s bona fide giants, it is tempting to cast your mind back to Simon Mignolet.

The Belgian looked like one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League during his time at Sunderland but appeared out of his depth between the sticks at Liverpool. And there’s a very obvious reason for this.

Mignolet had to face around ten shots a game at the Stadium of Light so he tended to stand out in almost every game he played. Even when he made the odd mistake, it appeared very harsh to lambast him because, until then, he had kept Sunderland in the game.

At Liverpool, however, Mignolet had far less to do and those errors were magnified as a result.

Vaclav Hladky could find himself in a very similar situation if he leaves bottom-of-the table St Mirren for high-flying Rangers.

“Rangers are interested in me and some negotiations are under way,” the Czech, who was recently the subject of a £200,000 bid from Qarabag, told the Daily Record on Tuesday.

Hladky has been the shining light in a miserable season for St Mirren but, considering the defence in front of him, it was all-but inevitable that he would stand out amidst the dross. A move to Rangers would represent a very different challenge, even if the Ibrox faithful would happily welcome him to Glasgow.
