Brighton reportedly make Stevan Jovetic offer after player rejects Newcastle move

Brighton and Hove Albion could add insult to injury for Newcastle United by landing Inter Milan forward Stevan Jovetic.

With just two weeks remaining in the transfer window, the future of Inter Milan forward Stevan Jovetic remains clouded in uncertainty.

Staying at Inter Milan does not appear to be an option for a player they signed on a permanent basis from Manchester City a year ago. And neither does a return to Sevilla, where Jovetic shone on loan in the second half of last season, with Goal reporting in June that Eduardo Berizzo’s side were struggling to meet Inter’s valuation.

Therefore, speculation surrounding a move to the Premier League has intensified in recent weeks though, according to Estadio Deportivo, Newcastle United may be left frustrated once again in a sluggish transfer window.

The report claims that the Magpies’ were meeting Inter Milan bosses over the weekend to thrash out a deal for the Montenegrin but, after a disastrous spell at Manchester City, Jovetic is wary about returning to England and has rejected Newcastle’s approach.

However, this has not stopped Brighton and Hove Albion making their interest known. Gazzetta Dello Sport (20th August, page 12) claim that the newly promoted Seagulls have made a substantial offer for Jovetic’s signature, though it is unknown whether it meets Inter’s £12.8 million asking price.

Shock return?

Though Brighton face a tough task convincing Jovetic to return to a country he struggled to settle in during a torrid two years at The Etihad which produced just eight league goals, the fact that they are capable of making such an offer for a high-profile player highlights the spending power of the Premier League.

They have already broken their transfer record for a forward in the last few days, landing Club Brugge speedster Jose Izquierdo for £13.5 million (The Guardian).

Jovetic, a forward capable of scoring or creating in equal measure, would go a long way to boosting their survival hopes. Though it would be a major blow to Newcastle if they lost a top target to a fellow newly promoted club.
