Harry Wilson is yet to truly make his mark at Liverpool – but could he fulfil his potential at Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic?
When Harry Wilson became Wales’ youngest all-time international after coming off the bench at the age of just 16 against Belgium, few expected that it would be four years until he made his first-team bow at Liverpool.
Yet, January’s FA Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle was the first time the club’s Under-23 captain had pulled on the famous red at senior level, ESPN reports.
While the likes of Ovie Ejaria, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Woodburn, Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer, have made waves in the first team this season, Wilson has been shielded from the limelight.
But will his lack of opportunities cost Liverpool one of their most exciting young talents in many a year? Possibly, with ESPN claiming that Celtic are keen on taking advantage of the winger’s inability to break into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team.
Manager Brendan Rodgers knows Wilson well, of course. However, he too did not give the goalscoring wideman an opportunity to prove his worth before being replaced by Klopp in October 2015.
‘Very talented’
Yet, while Wales boss Chris Coleman was more than happy to throw Wilson in at the deep end, Rodgers was a little more wary of overburdening this ‘very talented player’ (BBC).
Make no mistake, the Northern Irishman knew what a star the club had on its hands.
“To have him here at the club is brilliant,” Rodgers told the BBC. “He knows he will have a great opportunity here if he continues to develop at Liverpool.
“It’s important that we just stay calm and let him develop at his own rate.”
At Celtic, however, Wilson could realise that frightening potential. After all, Patrick Roberts moved to Parkhead in a similar muddle, unable to break into the Manchester City squad due to the treasure trove of attacking jewels at the club’s disposal.
However, after 18 excellent months at Celtic, Roberts is returning to the Etihad a new player and a new man.
Wilson, ironically, could take his place in the starting XI.
