Sunderland barely have two pennies to rub together yet alone spend on a 20-goal-a-season centre-forward. Therefore, perhaps it’s no surprise that David Moyes is scrambling around the Scottish lower leagues in desperate search for a bargain, The Chronicle reports.

Distinctly underwhelming reports emerged on Sunday that the Black Cats were targeting 28-year-old Hibernian loanee Efe Ambrose, a defender excluded by Brendan Rodgers for the entire first-half of the season and derided by many supporters for his error-prone ways.

And The Chronicle now claims that Moyes travelled to Easter Road personally on Friday night to watch Hibs defeat Dundee United 1-0 in an attempt to keep tabs on midfielder John McGinn and striker Jason Cummings.

22-year-old McGinn is a versatile midfielder and made his full Scotland debut in March last year but it is the links with Cummings that will attract the most intrigue.

Friday’s clash showcased both sides of the 21-year-old striker. Cummings’ thumping strike prior to the interval proved the match winner and scribed his name into Hibs’ history. He’s now the first player in almost 70 years to score 20 goals in three consecutive seasons for the Edinburgh club.

However, a stupid second half dismissal, in front of Moyes’ beady eyes, will not have done his hopes of a transfer any good. Particularly as he received the first for dissent and the second for handling the ball into the net just three minutes later.

Though with Sunderland still gallingly reliant on Jermaine Defoe, perhaps the embattled manager may overlook Cummings’ indiscretion.
