Scottish Premiership giants Celtic have been linked with Switzerland’s World Cup defender Fabian Schar.
If Celtic want to improve a defence that looked far too vulnerable at times last season despite a second successive domestic treble, replacing or upgrading Dedryck Boyata would be a good place to start.
The Belgian international has been in negotiations over a new deal at Parkhead for months but there has still been no agreement. As it stands, Boyata has just a year remaining on his contract and has been identified as a cut-price target for Serie A outfit Lazio, according to Radio Sei.
It’s fair to say many Celtic fans won’t be too unhappy to bid farewell to a man nicknamed by some as ‘bomb scare’ for his ability to implode at any given moment. Fortunately, Celtic appear to have a much better player lined up as Boyata’s potential replacement.
El Desmarque is reporting that The Hoops are keen to sign Swiss ace Fabian Schar from relegated La Liga outfit Deportivo once the World Cup is over. Now, Schar might not have become the world class centre-half many predicted he’d become during his formative years at Basel but he is a fine defender whose composure on the ball makes him a great fit for a Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Make no mistake, Schar would be an immediate upgrade on Boyata. As he showed during a solid performance against Brazil on Sunday, Celtic would have a defender capable of performing against the best.
