Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are said to be battling Swansea City to sign Borja Iglesias on a free transfer.
Odsonne Edouard did his hopes of sealing a permanent move to Celtic no harm when he scored a second half winner to seal a thrilling Old Firm derby triumph over Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday afternoon. But another striker who has been tipped to sign for Celtic in the summer transfer window enjoyed a fine weekend too.
Spanish paper El Periodico de Aragorn has reported that the Scottish champions have been closely following Real Zaragoza frontman Borja Iglesias. The 25-year-old has enjoyed an impressive season in Spain’s second tier – on loan from Celta Vigo – and will be a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season.
And Iglesias, a 6ft 2ins centre-forward with a velvet touch that belies his size, only enhanced his reputation further on Saturday. He scored his 13th goal of an impressive campaign for Zaragoza in a 3-1 home win against Lorca. And although he is unproven in Spain’s top flight, a record of almost one-in-two is impressive at any level. So it is no surprise that Celtic are thought to be interested.
The report, however, adds that Celtic face competition in Swansea City, a side who have had great success in signing players from Spain over the years.
Only West Brom have scored fewer than Swansea’s 25 league goals this season and, with Tammy Abraham only on loan and Wilfried Bony a shadow of his former self, a new striker will be a priority for Swansea manager Carlos Carvajal.
And Iglesias will only put himself in the shop window if he continues this impressive run.
