Rangers need a steadying hand and Zamora’s quotes from Jol’s time at Fulham do not bode well.
If Guus Hiddink parachuting into a toxic Stamford Bridge following part two of the Jose Mourinho saga taught us anything, it is that crisis is often best handled with a steady grip. Hiddink was renowned for his popularity among players and his ability to form a tight bond in the squad.
Therefore, a Rangers team in crisis appears in dire need of a stabilising influence in the final months of the campaign. This is perhaps why Alex McLeish, a former Gers boss, appears to be many people’s favourites to take over from Mark Warburton.
He may not be particularly inspiring but he represents a ‘safe pair of hands’.
However, for that very same reason, does this suggest that the club are perhaps better off avoiding former Tottenham and Fulham boss Martin Jol? According to The Scottish Sun, the 61-year-old is now out of the running.
After all, the Dutchman’s seemingly strained relationship with his players at Craven Cottage appeared to sow the seeds for their eventual plummet out of the Premier League.
Between 2010 and 2012, senior players Danny Murphy, Moussa Dembele, Clint Dempsey, Dickson Etuhu and Bobby Zamora had all been sold or released on Jol’s watch.
“I left because I didn’t see eye to eye with Martin Jol,” Zamora stated in quotes reported by The Telegraph.
“I think that is the case with the vast majority of players there now. A lot of the lads aren’t happy.”
Whether just baseless speculation or something more sinister, rumours of fall-outs have followed Jol throughout his time in English football.
As well as the aforementioned quintet, the Dutchman supposedly endured a strained relationship with John Arne Riise and Dimitar Berbatov.
Rangers, on the back of a turbulent season, could do without any more negative press. In the absence of quality, team spirit is essential.
