Rangers want to bring St Mirren star Lewis Morgan back to Glasgow – but big-spending Birmingham City stand in their way.

Birmingham City clearly aren’t fearful of splashing the cash. The Blues spent over £15 million on a plethora of new players over the summer, breaking their transfer record to land Brentford winger Jota for £6 million, as reported by Sky Sports.

Therefore, reports in the Daily Record that Birmingham, whose hefty summer investment has been repaid by a run of two wins in 11, have joined the chase for Lewis Morgan should be a cause for concern for both Celtic and Rangers.

The report claims that Birmingham have yet more money to spend and are likely to back new manager Steve Cotterill in January in an attempt to turn around a dismal start to the season. And St Mirren winger Morgan, scorer of eight goals in just 13 games this season, is understood to be one of their top targets.

Rangers, then, must move quick if they are to rectify a rather expensive mistake. Morgan started his career in The Gers’ academy before being released and joining St Mirren on a free in 2013.

The winger is out of contract next summer meaning Rangers, as well as Old Firm rivals Celtic, had harboured hopes of bringing Morgan back to Glasgow on a cut-price deal. Though Birmingham City possess the financial firepower to blow Rangers out of the water – especially after Pedro Caixinha’s side spent heavily in the summer to bring in ten new first-team players.

And Morgan, who slipped through their grasp four years ago, may prove to be out of their reach once again with St Mirren likely to accept the highest offer to avoid losing their prized asset for free.
