Greg Stewart failed to score a single Championship goal for Birmingham, but he has rediscovered his form in the Scottish Premiership with Kilmarnock.
It just never worked out for Greg Stewart at Birmingham City.
Big things were expected of the talented young striker when he moved to St Andrews from Dundee in 2016 for a fee potentially rising to £1 million, particularly after he was nominated for the Scottish Player’s Player of the Year award in successive seasons.
But the form he showed at Dundee deserted him in Birmingham. Stewart made just 22 appearances for the Midland club and failed to score a single goal in all competitions.
There was little surprise when he was loaned out to Kilmarnock in the summer, with the Birmingham Mail reporting that he had probably played his last game for the Blues. Manager Garry Monk clearly is not a fan, demoting him to the U18s before his departure.
But Steve Clarke is an admirer. The 28-year-old has rediscovered that golden touch at Rugby Park and scored his fourth goal in eight games in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Rangers.
And what a goal it was, beautifully curled into the top corner of the Ibrox net.
After the game, Killie boss Clarke could not hide his joy at Stewart’s latest impressive performance.
“He’s been great for us since he came in, he’s a terrific footballer,” the former West Brom manager told the Daily Record.
Birmingham have the option to bring Stewart back to St Andrews in January and, if he can perform like this in a blue shirt, he would only aid Monk’s side in their play-off challenge.
