Rafa Benitez worked with David Luiz at Chelsea and reportedly dreams of bringing the Brazilian centre-back to Premier League strugglers Newcastle United.

David Luiz has been subjected to plenty of criticism of late, but the Brazilian came roaring back to life against Manchester City on Saturday.

The Chelsea defender capped a superb Man of the Match performance with the second goal in a 2-0 win against the Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge, proving that it is far too soon to write off his career at the top level.

But it seems a terrific performance against Pep Guardiola’s side has not secured a long-term future in West London. According to the Mirror, the 31-year-old could be set to leave Chelsea for the second time at the end of this season.

Luiz’s contract is due to expire in July and the Mirror believes there is no sign of an extension just yet, although the former Benfica and PSG man would like to stay.

And you can imagine that this will not have passed Rafa Benitez by.

According to the Chronicle, Luiz is the dream signing for the Newcastle United manager, who worked with the Samba star during his time as Chelsea’s interim coach in 2012/13. Benitez even described Luiz as ‘world class’, according to the Mail.

If he is available on a free come the end of the season, it would be no surprise if Benitez went all out in an attempt to reunite with one of his favourite former players at St James’ Park.
