Derby County have reportedly been tracking Ben Davies, who is impressing elsewhere in the Championship with Preston North End this season.

Derby County fans might have been keeping a close eye on Ben Davies’ performance this weekend.
According to The Sun on Sunday (23 September, page 61), Derby are looking at potential long-term additions for their defence with Richard Keogh and Curtis Davies both the wrong side of 30 and the impressive Fikayo Tomori only on loan from Chelsea.
And Preston ace Davies fits the bill. Like summer signings Jack Marriott, Duane Holmes and George Evans, he is another highly-rated young Championship talent with plenty of potential to get better.
The Sun claims that Rams boss Frank Lampard has been watching the 23-year-old in recent weeks. But the former Newport and Fleetwood Town loanee didn’t exactly turn heads for the right reasons in his first outing since those Derby links emerged.

Preston lost 3-2 at home to West Brom on Sunday and it was Davies’ own goal who set The Baggies on their way to victory. With about 20 minutes to go, the centre-back diverted a cross into his own net with a high looping header that Chris Maxwell simply couldn’t keep out.
It’s fair to say this is not the sort of defensive nous that Derby are looking for. But Lampard and co should not let one mistake overshadow a number of impressive displays from the Lilywhite stopper.
