Bayern Munich are in disarray currently so it could it be the perfect time for Celtic to play them in the Champions League?
Carlo Ancelotti gestures during the UEFA Champions League football match between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich are suffering arguably their biggest crisis in confidence since Jurgen Klinsmann was manager during the 2008/09 season, after sacking Carlo Ancelotti.
Club chairman Uli Hoeness revealed that “there were five players against Ancelotti”, as quoted by the Independent, with Robert Lewandowski, Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller believed to be among them.
Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben (R) speaks with Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar (C) as midfielder Giovanni Lo Celso looks on.
A permanent successor to the Italian is yet to be appointed, with Willy Sagnol currently acting as interim, while Bayern are five points off leaders Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and second in their Champions League group after a humbling 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
All of this should give hope to Celtic as they are set to face the German champions in Europe in back-to-back matches on October 18 and 31 and could possibly not be playing them at a better time.
Scott Sinclair of Celtic celebrates with teammates after scoring his side’s third goal during the UEFA Champions League group B match against RSC Anderlecht.
When the groups were drawn, PSG and Bayern were the clear favourites to progress, with the Bhoys and Anderlecht expected to fight it out for third place and Europa League qualification.
Yet after Brendan Rodgers’ side resoundingly beat the Belgians 3-0 in their last fixture in the competition, they are currently level with the managerless Bavarians ahead of the two games against each other.
On the pitch their opponents have been both shaky in defence and lacking cohesion going forward, which is unlikely to be helped by this disruption off it.
Parkhead has famously been a difficult place for even the greatest teams on the continent to visit – as shown by the 2-1 victory against Barcelona in 2012 – and with Rodgers having the Glasgow outfit playing their best football for some time, could they genuinely make it through to the last 16?
