Premier League side Everton were reportedly considering a move for Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga champion Juan Bernat back in January.
With Everton’s pursuit of a new left-back ongoing, they may have just been handed the perfect opportunity.
Leighton Baines cannot go on forever despite his enduring consistency and the likes of Joe Bryan, Alex Telles, Danny Rose and Tom Pearce have all been linked with a move to Goodison Park as the Toffees eye a younger alternative to their long-serving number three.
It is understood that Bayern, who won the Bundesliga last season but exited the Champions League at the semi-final stage and lost to Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal decider, are keen to shake up their squad this summer.
Arturo Vidal, Jerome Boateng and Thiago Alcantara might have played their last games for the German giants and they could be joined by Bernat. The Spaniard endured an injury-hit 2017/18 campaign and, even when fit, struggled to display David Alaba at left-back.
But he would be a brilliant addition for Everton. The Liverpool Echo stated that the Toffees were considering Bernat back in January and he would probably come cheaper than some of the more expensive options like Telles or Rose.
Bernat, who joined Bayern from Valencia for £8 million in 2014, is a diminutive, quick and attack-minded full-back similar in style to fellow Spaniard Jordi Alba.
