Scottish Premiership giants Rangers have been watching Dundee midfielder Glen Kamara, who has shone at Dens Park since leaving Arsenal.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers appear willing to back Steven Gerrard in the transfer market this summer with a couple of big-name, marquee targets already linked with a dramatic move to Ibrox.

But the likes of Jermain Defoe, Connor Goldson, Kyle Bartley and Oli McBurnie, who the Sun claimed recently was the subject of a £4 million bid from the Glasgow giants, will not come cheap, either due to high wages or a hefty transfer fee.

So it remains to be seen, with more proven and well-known targets on the radar, whether Rangers will set aside ‘serious cash’ to spend on the promising Dundee midfielder Glen Kamara.

The Express (13 May, back page) recently claimed that Rangers had sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old former Arsenal midfielder during Dundee’s final day clash with Partick Thistle, with a ball-winning, box-to-box enforcer seemingly required at Ibrox.

Dundee boss Neil McCann has made it clear that Rangers will not be able to land Kamara, who signed last year on a free from Arsenal, on a cut-price deal.

“Glen will be going nowhere unless it’s right for this club and I mean that will need to be serious cash,” McCann said in quotes reported by the Daily Record (live blog, 8.56am).

Rangers purchasing Kamara would certainly eat into their budget, and perhaps they will have to make a tough call between him and a more established player who would represent more of a statement signing.

But if Rangers are to challenge Celtic over the next few years, they need to think of the long-term rather than quick fix, marquee additions. It did not work out so well with Bruno Alves, Joey Barton and co after all.

Kamara is a really promising talent, proven in the Scottish game who could learn a lot from Gerrard. He might not be the biggest name Rangers could sign but he is the sort of addition the club needs to make.
