Premier League club Spurs have been linked with world class Serie A duo Maurio Icardi and Ciro Immobile… and West Brom’s Salomon Rondon.
Has Mauricio Pochettino taken Tottenham Hotspur as far as he can? With a strict wage budget in place and key players such as Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele seemingly heading for the exit, you could forgive the Argentine boss for wondering if he has hit a glass ceiling.
Which makes this summer’s transfer window potentially make or break in North London. If chairman Daniel Levy wants to convince Pochettino that he can take the club further, the best thing he could do would be to put his hand in his pocket and write a cheque for a genuinely world class attacker.
That is possibly the biggest statement of intent Levy could make.
And the initial signs were positive; exceedingly so. Mauro Icardi and Ciro Immobile finished the 2017/18 season level as Serie A’s top scorers with 29 goals apiece – and both have been linked with a stunning move to Tottenham.
So it is difficult to put into words just how underwhelming a deal for West Brom targetman Salomon Rondon would be. According to The Mirror, Spurs are keeping tabs on the Venezuelan, who is available for £16 million this summer after the Baggies’ relegation.
But while Immobile and Icardi are two of the most feared strikers in world football, Rondon is, well, not. In 108 Premier League games, he has scored 24 goals and Spurs fans could be forgiven for making comparisons with Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen.
While Icardi and Immobile would be the sort of signing that should convince Pochettino to stay, paying £16 million for Rondon instead should have the opposite effect.
