The attacker has stood out on loan at Blackburn Rovers and possesses the pace and precision required in Derby County’s attack.
There is little doubt that Blackburn Rovers fans would snap your hand off if you offered them Marvin Emnes on a free transfer in the summer.
The Lancashire giants may still be a point adrift of safety but, without the flying Dutchman, their chances of Championship survival would appear more impossible than improbable. With four goals and five assists to his name this season, Emnes has often been Blackburn’s most dangerous attacking force.
And despite the fact he recently went 21 league games without a goal, it was the nature of the way he broke his duck that summed up his season at Ewood Park with the winning strike against fellow relegation rivals Wigan Athletic.
With his contract at Swansea City up in the summer and manager Paul Clement resisting the temptation to recall him in January despite the club teetering above the drop zone and paying the majority of his wages, it seems that Emnes will soon be on the market.
However, the harsh reality is that Blackburn may have a mountain to climb convincing him to remain at the struggling side for another year, even if they do retain their second tier status.
His performances are likely to have attracted interest from afar. And Derby could certainly do a lot worse. Goals, or a lack thereof, have been the Rams’ Achilles heel this season and the fact that Emnes can utilise his rapid pace in wide areas may also appeal to Gary Rowett.
After all, any Derby fan will tell you that Ikechi Anya, Johnny Russell (below) and Abdoul Camara have hardly justified their selection this season.
Therefore, picking up Emnes on a free would appear a no-brainer.
The club have spent far too much on under-performing attackers in recent seasons and this would go some way to answering questions about the club’s recruitment.
