Available for £4.5m but will Everton think twice about Trezeguet?

Everton were reportedly watching Mahmoud Hassan last season and he has just performed for Egypt at the World Cup.

The race to sign Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’ Hassan is well and truly on.

Hurriyet claims that Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a £4.5 million bid to trigger his release clause at parent club Anderlecht. So now the ball is in Everton’s court.

The Sun claimed back in April that Everton were tracking the 23-year-old winger, who shot to fame in Turkey last season during a loan spell with Kasimpasa. 13 goals and six assists was a fantastic tally for a player starring in a mid-table side.

But should Everton now follow in Wolves’ footsteps and trigger Trezeguet’s very affordable release clause? It depends how you judge his displays for Egypt at the World Cup.

In truth, he was probably Egypt’s brightest player in defeats to Uruguay, Russia and Saudi Arabia. Lightning quick, positive and direct at all times, Trezeguet was the one player in Hector Cuper’s squad – apart from a half-fit Mo Salah – who looked a genuine threat.

But that does not mean he is good enough for Everton. At least not right now. The Toffees struggled for creativity out wide last season, particularly with Yannick Bolasie struggling for form and, while Trezeguet would give Marco Silva some much needed pace in the final third, it seems he is simply too raw to be handed his big break at Goodison Park.

Like Salah, however, Trezeguet could come good in the future and turn those natural attributes into something rather spectacular. Everton should take another look when he starts to fulfil his potential.
