Jordan Henderson has impressed in the Premier League with Liverpool and shone as England battered Montenegro in Euro 2020 qualifying.
Montenegro and Atletico Madrid defender Stefan Savic has hit out at Jordan Henderson after England’s comfortable Euro 2020 qualifying win in Podgorica, as reported by the Sun (27 March, page 57).
Liverpool captain Henderson came off the bench midway through the second half and played with a palpable confidence as Gareth Southgate’s side swatted aside seemingly difficult opponents 5-1 away from home.
The former Sunderland star even set up Raheem Sterling’s goal as England ran riot, following up Friday’s 5-0 thumping of the Czech Republic in style.
But one man who wasn’t impressed with Henderson’s conduct was Savic, the former Manchester City youngster who joined Atletico in 2015 for £10 million, according to talkSPORT.
“We all know they are a much bigger team than us but sometimes I feel very bad to be playing the same sport as some players,” Savic said.
“Jordan Henderson, for example, sarcastically told our player after one normal clash he would give him a jersey after the match. It is ugly and disrespectful. I told him he was good enough not to act like that.
“We are proud and I’d rather play with this team and concede five goals and not with some arrogant players from England.”
Henderson has a fight on his hands to secure a starting place for club and country over the coming months. Fabinho has arguably taken his place at the heart of Liverpool’s XI while West Ham United starlet Declan Rice looks like the long-term solution to England’s problems at the base of midfield.
So Henderson, who manages to be both underrated and limited at the same time, will be hoping that his excellent impact against Montenegro stands him in good stead going forward.
