Everton appointing Diego Simeone seems a long shot, but could Atletico Madrid’s struggles this season work in their favour?
Diego Simeone looks on before the La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal.
Owner Farhad Moshiri is thought to want Simeone ahead of the three others in the running – current caretaker David Unsworth, Sam Allardyce and Watford’s Marco Silva.
Farhad Moshiri, Everton owner, is seen prior to the Premier League match against Watford.
Moshiri would be prepared to offer the Argentine a long-term deal and back him with funding in the transfer market so that the Toffees can compete with the biggest clubs in the Premier League.
Yet many would question why Simeone would leave Atletico, one of the biggest clubs in European football, to take on a struggling side in England?
Well, unlike in previous seasons under the 47-year-old, the Madrid outfit are having an uncharacteristically poor campaign to date. They are admittedly unbeaten in La Liga, but five draws from 11 matches already sees them eight points off leaders Barcelona in fourth.
Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro of Atletico Madrid looks dejected during the UEFA Champions League group C match against Qarabag FK.
In the Champions League, a competition Atleti have reached the final of twice in the past four years, they look set to exit at the group stage with both Chelsea and Roma in a better position to qualify with two games left to play.
Simeone is understood to still be happy in the Spanish capital, as shown by him recently signing a contract extension until 2020 having been in charge since 2011, but maybe a sense of taking the club as far as they can go will tempt the South American into a change.
