Newcastle United’s record signing Miguel Almiron has been compared to Gareth Bale by Atlanta United president Darren Eales as he prepares to make his Premier League debut tonight.
After months of speculation, the Magpies finally snapped up the influential Paraguayan play-maker during the January transfer window, paying £21 million to end Michael Owen’s 14-year reign as the club’s most expensive player, as reported by the Mirror.
The signing of Almiron has brought some much-needed optimism back to St James’ Park, with the quick-footed midfielder possessing the skill and vision to be Newcastle’s most naturally gifted footballer since the days of Hatem Ben Arfa.
Speaking to the Mirror, Eales has suggested that Newcastle could even have their answer to Real Madrid and Wales superstar Gareth Bale.
“In terms of his playing on the pitch, he is non-stop, perpetual motion. He is faster with the ball than without it. He reminds me very much of Gareth Bale that way,” he said.
“When Gareth picked the ball up, he always seemed to be quicker when he had the ball and Miggy is like that with his pace.”
Almiron might be a central player rather than a winger but you can see where Eales is coming from. The 25-year-old has the ability to zoom past bamboozled opponents in the blink of an eye, turning defence into attack in an instant.
He scored 13 goals and set up 13 more during his final season in America, inspiring Atlanta to MLS Cup glory.
