Sheffield United were expected to sign Scott Hogan on loan from Championship powerhouses Aston Villa before transfer deadline day

Sheffield United have signed a striker on deadline day – but it is not Scott Hogan.
As reported by Sky Sports (live blog, 11.47am), The Blades have completed a deal to bring Connor Washington from Queens Park Rangers after his contract was cancelled at Loftus Road.
But what does this mean for Villa’s number nine? With just hours to go until the transfer window closes, it seems that Hogan has been left in limbo.
Just two days ago, the Sheffield Star reported that the Republic of Ireland international was Chris Wilder’s first-choice target as he aimed to add another goalscorer to his Sheffield United squad.
But signing Washington could close the door on Hogan’s potential move to Brammal Lane. And the 26-year-old is facing an uncertain future now at Aston Villa.

Because the Sun is reporting that Aston Villa are set to sign Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea before today’s 5pm deadline. The two-time England international scored 23 Championship goals during a loan spell at Bristol City in 2016/17 so could be Steve Bruce’s go-to man if he can recapture that form.
Hogan, then, is likely to fall ever further down the pecking order with Jonathan Kodjia and Keinan Davis already preferred by Bruce. And with a move to Sheffield United seemingly off the cards, he is facing four months on the bench.
